Ron is a free lance pianist/director/composer/educator in the Chicago metropolitan area. Ron is a studio teacher of jazz and classical piano at the Music Institute of Chicago in Lake Forest IL. As a jazz pianist he has performed at the: Green Dolphin Street, Pete Miller's Steak House (Evanston and Wheeling), Andy's Chicago, Pop's For Champagne (Highwood and Chicago), Hotel Nikko Chicago, Blackhawk Lodge Chicago, Hothouse, Metropole Lounge Fairmont Hotel, Catch 35, Ritz Carlton Hotel Chicago, Hyatt Regency O'Hare, Drake Hotel Chicago, etc.
Ron studied jazz piano with Mr. George Shearing and is the director of both the "IFS" jazz orchestra and the Ron Surace Quartet/Trio. He has 4 CD releases on the Southport label: "The New Cool", "Nearly Blue", "Trio City" and "Trio City Two ...The Return Of The Trio," and on Columbia Pictures LP "Jazz Date: Kent State." Ron won the "Silver Award" and the "Outstanding Muiscal Performance Award," at the Downbeat (Magazine) Musicfest USA National Finals in Oakland California. He was also awarded the "NEA/GCA" Southeastern States Composers Competition Award with a $1,000.00 stipend/commission.
The "IFS" big band has performed for numerous venues to include: The Chicago McCormic Center concert for Rotary International; Chicago Cultural Center for the National Cystic Fibrosis Foundation; Chicago Black Orchid for the Injury Conference of Illinois, Oakton College Bluestem Music Festival Series (three concerts); Patty Turner Center Concert Series (four concerts on Great American Bi g Bands to include: 1. The Composers 2 The Arrnagers 3. The Leaders, Chicago 1915 - 1940.; The Levy Center; Chateau Ritz; Morton Grove Summer Concerts; Prebyterian Homer NYE Celebration (an Annual event) Dickinson Hall Concert Series at the Lake Bluff/Lake Forest Center; etc Ron has played with the following big Swing jazz orchestras: Glenn Miller, Ralph Martieri, Bob Crosby, and Si Zentner.
THE "IN FULL SWING" JAZZ ORCHESTRA: GENERAL INFORMATION ---Dr. Ron Surace, director. 1) In May of 2019 the "IN FULL SWING" jazz orchestra was invited to participate in the First Class of the CORREDON INTERNATIONAL BIG BAND COMPETITION in Hoofdorp, the Netherlands. 2) THE "IFS" JAZZ ORCHESTRA was selected as the "Best of the Best V" in 2005- and 2006 by the Library Administrators Council of Northern Illinois (LACONI AWARD) for library programs for adults. 3) In 2005 the orchestra performed for the Rotary International Convetnion at the McCormick Place auditorium in Chicago. 4) IFS presented a two part concert series for the "Blue Stem Historical Arts Councert Series" at Oakton Community College featuring the history and development of big band jazz with lecture and performances. 5) The band presented a four part concert series featuring eight decades of big bands in Chicago from 1920 to the present (i.e., Great American Big Band Composers; Great American Big Band Arrangers; Great American Big Band Directors; Great American Big Band Performers) at the Patty Turner Center auditorium in Deerfield, IL 6) IFS presents an annual concert/dance for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation at the Ritz Carlton Hotel (or the Marriott) in chicago. The venue changes location from year to year. The band has helped raise nearly $600.000.00 for the charity.
